Launchings June 2010

Message from the Director of the

Missiles and More Museum

The Museum opened the season on April 5th, which coincided with spring break Easter week; needless to say the Museum was bustling with 253 visitors for the week.

The Docent and Orientation Training Session was held in March. The purpose of the session is to introduce future and present volunteers to the many aspects of being a docent as well as to refresh their memories of facts regarding current exhibits. We added six new volunteers to our roster!  If interested in volunteering your services to the Museum call Rose Peters at 328-2488.

We celebrated and honored our docents with a Thank You Reception in January. The Museum would not be able to operate without the efforts and enthusiasm of these volunteers.

Intern Julia Ling is hard at work at the museum.

We are privileged to have young energetic interns working at the Museum this summer.  Jacob Ling returned and he is now a veteran docent.  Jacob is joined by his sister, Julia this summer. Together they are a great Team!!!  Jacob and Julia reside in Georgia and spend their summers at Topsail Island.

New to the Museum this year is Kayleigh Flynn. She is a very bright and bubbly young student from Penderlea School.

Kayleigh Flynn is a big help at the museum.

We are blessed to have these eager and energetic young people on our team.

We have conducted several children’s tours since opening in April.

Durham Academy visited in May with 72 fourth graders.  These children are very bright and courteous and look forward to their visit each year.

Spirit of Life School from Clinton, N.C. visited the Museum in May.

Beulaville Elementary School’s Special Ed Class (Fourth to Ninth Grades) also visited us.  We were  impressed with their determination and perseverance as they completed the Museum Scavenger Hunt.

The Museum participates in the Cape Fear Passport Explorer program each year. The program is a great way to discover history, science, culture and excitement of the four-county region known as Cape Fear. Your passport is stamped at each site visited.  The program encourages families to open their horizons to  the wonderful attractions we have in this area.

Camp LeJeune  Parents magazine has chosen the Missiles and More Museum as a feature article on free things to do in our area.  We borrowed the grandchildren of Beth Holder, a docent and member of the Historical Society of Topsail Island Board, to be featured in this article.

Be on the lookout for more Launchings from the Missiles and More Museum and plan to include a visit to the Museum on your vacation itinerary!!!
